The Man Who Laughs

1928 • silent • Accompanied Live by Robert York on the Mighty Wurlitzer • 1928 • Conrad Veidt, Mary Philbin A romantic, dramatic, silent feature directed by the German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni. It is an adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1869 novel of the same name, and features superstar of the silent era Mary Philbin and German-born mega star Conrad Veidt. The film is known for the grim carnival freak-like grin on the Veidt’s face, which pushes the film into the realm of horror. Great silent filmmaking, great acting. If you’ve never seen this creepy work of art, mark your calendar!
