It launched the career of director Josef Von Sternberg through the film's intense portrayal of a doomed crime boss and the price he pays for loyalty to his nefarious crowd. Legendary screenwriter Ben Hecht came to Hollywood to bring this tale of Chicago gangsters to life and was awarded the first Academy Award for Best Story.
